New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) 100-year journey as a reflection of “enduring national consciousness” rising to meet the challenges of every era.
"RSS works on the principle of nation-first, and its 100-year journey is an example of sacrifice, selfless service, nation-building, and discipline," the PM said here at an event after releasing a specially designed commemorative postage stamp and Rs 100 coin highlighting the RSS’s contributions to the nation. The coin, featuring Bharat Mata in Varad Mudra alongside the national emblem, carries the Sangh’s motto: “Rashtraya Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama.”
Modi noted this may be the first instance of Bharat Mata’s image appearing on Indian currency. Highlighting the RSS’s five transformative resolutions—self-awareness, social harmony, family enlightenment, civic discipline, and environmental consciousness—Modi described these as essential for India’s progress towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
He emphasised that self-awareness also signifies embracing swadeshi and asserted that self-reliance is no longer an option but a necessity. The PM called upon society to adopt the mantra of swadeshi as a collective resolve and urged everyone to dedicate their full energy towards making the “Vocal for Local” campaign a resounding success.
Tracing the founding of the RSS in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, Modi emphasised that its establishment was no mere coincidence but a revival of an ancient tradition wherein national spirit continuously renews itself to confront contemporary challenges. The RSS, he stated, represents a “virtuous incarnation” of this timeless national ethos. Addressing the swayamsevaks gathered, the Prime Minister acknowledged the privilege of witnessing the Sangh’s centenary and paid homage to its founder.
Recalling the historical significance of the postage stamp, Modi remarked on the participation of RSS swayamsevaks in the 1963 Republic Day parade, capturing the spirit of patriotism and dedication. He lauded the unwavering service of the Sangh’s volunteers, who continue to empower society across the country. Drawing a metaphor between the RSS and a mighty river that nourishes the land it flows through, Modi highlighted the Sangh’s extensive network of affiliated organisations engaged in diverse fields, including education, agriculture, social welfare, tribal upliftment, women empowerment, arts, sciences, and labour. Despite expanding into multiple streams, he stressed, the Sangh remains united in its singular purpose of “Nation First.”
The PM also described the 'shakha' as a sacred ground fostering collective spirit, character building, and the values of teamwork and sacrifice. He identified three foundational pillars of the Sangh’s century-long journey: a grand vision of nation-building, a clear path of individual development, and a disciplined working method. Recalling the Sangh’s active role in India’s freedom struggle, Modi paid tribute to its sacrifices during the colonial era, the integration of princely states, and its continued dedication post-independence.
He also acknowledged the trials faced by the Sangh, including false allegations and suppression attempts, highlighting the steadfast composure and commitment of its leaders. Modi emphasised the Sangh’s enduring faith in democracy and constitutional institutions, which enabled it to resist challenges such as the Emergency. He recalled the Sangh’s humanitarian response during Partition, natural disasters, wars, and communal crises, underscoring its role as a pillar of support in times of national distress.
Highlighting the Sangh’s work among tribal communities, Modi praised its efforts to preserve cultural identity and empower marginalised groups through organisations like Seva Bharati, Vidya Bharati, and Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram.
Addressing social issues, he noted the RSS’s longstanding fight against caste-based discrimination and untouchability, invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s praise of the Sangh’s spirit of equality. The Prime Minister referred to the vision of current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat for social harmony, calling for an inclusive society free of division.
Modi acknowledged the evolving challenges India faces today, from economic competition to demographic and security concerns. He praised the government’s efforts in tackling these issues, and the Sangh’s roadmap aligned with national priorities.
As the Prime Minister reflected on the RSS journey, he said that attempts were made after independence to stop the organisation from joining the national mainstream. Those present on the occasion included union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and RSS Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale, and a large number of RSS workers from across the country.
